Katharine Lee Bates wrote the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" in 1893, after an inspiring climb to the top of Pike's Peak near Colorado Springs: "When I saw the view, I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse."
